What is a Booking Engine?

A Booking Engine is software integrated into your official property website that allows visitors to check room availability, see rates, and most importantly, book their stay directly.

Unlike a simple contact form ("Request availability"), the Booking Engine works in real-time: it confirms the booking instantly, processes the payment (or credit card guarantee), and sends confirmation via email.

Why do you need a Booking Engine?

  • Best Price Guarantee: The price on your site must always be equal to or lower than that of the OTAs. Even just 5% less can make a difference.
  • Exclusive Benefits: "Book directly and get breakfast included", or "Free welcome drink", or "Late check-out".
  • Simple User Experience: Your Booking Engine must be as easy to use as Booking.com. If booking on your site is difficult, the user will go back to the OTA.

Features of a Winning Booking Engine

Not all booking engines are created equal. Here is what to look for:

  • Mobile Friendly: Over 60% of travel searches happen on smartphones. Your booking engine must be perfect on mobile.
  • Integrated with PMS: As with the Channel Manager, integration is vital. Availability must be real and the booking must automatically enter the management system.
  • Secure Payment Gateways: Must support SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) payments and integrate with gateways like Stripe or Nexi.
  • Multi-language and Multi-currency: To welcome international guests.
